How Has Breakfast Evolved?
By Elizabeth Giddens
What an upper-middle class New Yorker might have found on his morning table through the ages:

Retailers opening on Thanksgiving for Black Friday...
Several different major retailers have decided to push back their Black Friday opening times to midnight or even 10pm on Thanksgiving day of this year. Target, Walmart, Macy’s, Best Buy and Kohl’s are all on the bandwagon.
However, as a petition against Target created by an employee explains:

Just been to see Derren Brown
robsblogparty:
He was filming the finale to a new show in Todmorden town hall. He told everyone not to say what happened but it was very cool. He’s been filming in Todmorden (20 minutes drive away) for the past few weeks with hidden cameras and stuff and it’s all very cool.
He’s doing fireworks there tonight but I can’t find anyone to go with!

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too, If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and...

The Sugary Secret of Self-Control
By STEVEN PINKER
Roy F. Baumeister and John Tierney explore what we can do to increase self-control.
“[Baumeister] showed that self-control, though almost certainly heritable in part, can be toned up by exercising it. He enrolled students in regimens that required them to keep track of their eating, exercise regularly, use a mouse with their weaker...

Explainer: How Advertising Manipulates Your... →
This is an excellent article about the psychology of advertising, consumer decisions, and happiness. It’s a bit long, but very well written and thorough.
Advertisements aren’t inherently bad, but many use manipulative tactics that influence in ways we don’t even realize. Despite how much you think you ignore them, and how little you may believe they affect you, that’s not...

OUT of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the...

While you can count on every HuffPost headline starting with WATCH or PHOTOS and every NY Post screamer being a pun your grandfather would have found hilarious, the Times has its own headline ruts that seem to have gotten deeper over the years. Here are the four most common kinds…
