ter·rar·i·um   [tuh-rair-ee-uhm]

1. a vivarium for land animals (distinguished from aquarium).

2. a glass container, chiefly or wholly enclosed, for growing and displaying plants.

Recently, I saw that Bows and Sparrows had a terrarium workshop. Terrariums remind me Biosphere 2, recently acquired by the University of Arizona. It’s truly a time capsule- a slightly decrepit human terrarium. I loved it. It reminded me of all those dystopian science fiction stories I loved growing up. Terrariums make me think of the 70s when they mixed sleek modern design with a hint of nature peaking around the corner.

I’d like to make one of my own just to have a bit of the desert with me. So I’ve been doing my research. And since terrariums are making a come back (according to the New York Times) like so much decor of the 70s… the blogs are rife with terrarium information. So here’s allllllll the information I gathered.

Title: To Zanarkand (orchestral) Artist: Nobuo Uematsu 31 plays

I’m sharing one of my favorite pieces of music ever. Its beauty is unreal, especially at 2:17. I can close my eyes and lose myself wherever the music takes me.

Last summer, I had the privilege of attending a symphonic concert of Nobuo Uematu’s music in Houston, which included To Zanarkand. I was in complete bliss; I have loved Uematsu for years and years, since I was captivated by Terra’s Theme in Final Fantasy VI (mid 90’s). Nobuo Uematsu is the composer for the Final Fantasy game series, and, I’m convinced, has played a critical role in the series’ success. Where would Star Wars be without John Williams? At the concert, a fan asked Uematsu which of the games’ soundtracks was his favorite. I was quite pleased when he answered “Final Fantasy VI”, my long time favorite game, a steampunk world with character-driven music of great beauty and emotion.

Final Fantasy VI was a sort of ending point for me. Not just the music, but the whole game. I thought, if I do this work for the rest of my life, how many more games will I be able to do? With the satisfaction and excitement I felt after finishing that project, I thought I had reached my primary goal, and could quit doing game music with no regrets.

Take a look at this incredibly beautiful interactive journey through Monet’s paintings. The website was prepared for Monet’s new exhibition at Les Galeries Nationales, Grand Palais in Paris.

This is truly how the internet should be used - to create and spread beauty.

During 2009, the New York Times released one feature a week in their series “One in 8 Million”, in which a narrated slide show detailed the life of one New Yorker. Above is a beautiful atmospheric story about a woman who spends her free time simply walking around the city, one of my very favorites that I wanted to share with you.
